Quando a coleta de sangue é realizada, muitas vezes, aparece um hematoma no lugar onde a agulha perfurou. O que ocorre, na verdade, é que o sangue extravasa pelo minúsculo orifício criado pela agulha na veia, o que é normal*. No fim do exame sanguíneo é comum massagearmos o local da picada, por conta do desconforto e ardência causados na área, mas isso não deve ser feito**, pois facilita o aparecimento de hematomas.

O extravasamento de sangue é mais comum em mulheres, idosos e crianças, pois são o que têm as veias mais finas e delicadas***. Pessoas que fazem uso de anticoagulantes ou têm veias com pressão interna alta são mais propensas à formação de hematomas*. Além disso, a falta de técnica do atendente e movimentação excessiva durante a coleta de sangue também resultam em hematomas.

É importante que, logo após a coleta, seja feita uma compressão no local perfurado, pressionando por aproximadamente três minutos***. Caso a punção tenha sido feita na altura da dobra do braço, deve-se evitar flexioná-lo. Deve-se, também, observar se há algum objeto, como relógio ou pulseiras, apertando o local.

Se as medidas acima não forem tomadas ou se não surtirem efeito, algumas atitudes podem ser adotadas para eliminar o hematoma mais rapidamente*:
